Power To The People

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Artist Notes:

POWER TO THE PEOPLE is based on John August Swanson’s early works, drawings and paintings done from 1969 to 1974. The work, adapted from an earlier hand-printed serigraph, is a very compelling piece for him, because it connects with his own experiences in looking for work. It parallels his family life, as his mother, an immigrant from Mexico, was a garment worker who had joined the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) in the early 1930s, and Mr. Swanson himself is also active with peace, labor, and civil rights groups; and has joined in marches in protest against racism, and the Vietnam War.
