Artist Notes:
BURIAL is based on a sketch I did in 1978, done from a painting I saw in Rotterdam, Netherlands. I was moved by this painting portraying the entombment of Christ. However, years later, I am unable to find the name of this master artist, the title of his work, nor the year it was completed. I was immediately drawn to the humanity of his figures; the care and concern they showed for the body of Christ, and the certain stillness and sorrow shown on the day Christ was taken down from the cross.
I developed the sketch into a finished painting throughout the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012. In my painting, from the small pencil sketch, I slowly added colors and created forms from my rough suggested shapes. I had no reference to the original painting, but I developed a dramatic scene keeping the themes that I remembered, and which inspired me. As I was painting, it became more personal. There is a contemplative aspect to each of the characters as they try to understand this great tragedy.
