Inspired by Pope Francis' Urbi Et Orbi on Friday, March 27, 2020, which juxtaposed Mark 4:35-41 with the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was moved to create an artwork. The Pope's words:
"We were caught off guard by an unexpected, turbulent storm. We have realized that we are on the same boat, all of us fragile and disoriented, but at the same time important and needed, all of us called to row together, each of us in need of comforting the other. On this boat... are all of us. Just like those disciples, who spoke anxiously with one voice, saying "We are perishing" (v. 38), so we too have realized that we cannot go on thinking of ourselves, but only together can we do this." |
perfectly encapsulated the world's plight, and our need to help each other.
The Storm began as many small watercolor sketches, each one trying to convey the rowers' struggle against a raging storm. I chose one 9" x 11" watercolor sketch, which I referred to as, We are All Rowers on the Ship. At first, I was unsure of the direction I wanted to go in. I painted and tried new ideas on the sketch, as I also worked on a larger 15.25" x 21" painting, which I titled, THE STORM. The larger size allowed me to add many more details to the sky and figures, as well as a colorful border. The larger painting was scanned on June 19th for the Giclee edition. I continued to work on the painting, and to proof the Giclee. With every proof printed, I added more colors and details to the artwork. THE STORM painting was completed on July 6th. The Giclee image was further expanded to 19.75" x 29". After eleven proofs, done over more than three months, the Giclee edition was approved for printing on July 14th. The first five edition prints were delivered to my studio, signed, and numbered on July 27, 2020.
